Madavachi – Rambava Massacre – September 1984

Madhavachi is a border village of Anuradhapura district. Madavachi town is located on the Jaffna Kandi road on the southern side, about thirty km from Vavunia town. Sinhalese and Muslims are the majority living in Madavachi.

People coming from Colombo to Jaffna used to travel through Madavachi. After the genocide in 1983, the Sinhalese there continued to attack the Tamil people and their vehicles traveling on this road.

In the first week of September, 1984, a passenger bus coming from Colombo to Jaffna was intercepted by the soldiers on guard at Madavachi junction, took the bus to the road from Madavachi to Mannar and opened fire on the bus. Fifteen people, including the bus driver, were killed in the attack by the army. Thirty-one passengers were injured.
